Where We Serve

Almost 125 years ago, the Sisters of Providence came to Vancouver and opened St. Paul’s Hospital. While we've grown a lot since then, our commitment to serving those most in need has remained constant.

CEO & Board Chair Reflection

As a Catholic health care organization, we are a promoter and defender of the intrinsic value and dignity of every human being, where the patients, residents and families involved in the healing journey are our partners.

President & CEO

Eric Harris
Chair, Board of Directors

From modest beginnings almost 125 years ago with the founding of St. Paul’s Hospital to the globally renowned research, teaching and care organization we have become, the people at Providence have demonstrated a common trait – an unrelenting commitment to providing compassionate, socially just and innovative care to society’s most vulnerable populations.

As a Catholic health care organization, we are a promoter and defender of the intrinsic value and dignity of every human being, where the patients, residents and families involved in the healing journey are our partners. We are purveyors of a culture that creates empathy and awareness – of ourselves and others – and enables opportunities to build profound relationships with people that have lasting impacts on their lives.

Our patient- and resident-centred approach continually strengthens our global reputation and helps to spotlight BC’s excellence in numerous areas of leadership, including in HIV/AIDS care and research through the amazing work of the BC Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS, in cardio-pulmonary care, renal/kidney health, mental health and substance use, in seniors’ care, in youth-focused services, and many others.

Our research, teaching and care accomplishments this past year – as always, in close cooperation with our health authority, academic, government and community partners – further demonstrated that resolve.

We are at the forefront of enabling health care transformation with the planning for the new St. Paul’s Hospital and Health Campus. We are now at a major milestone, having completed a business plan and submitted it to the Ministry of Health for review.

For our seniors population, and in keeping with our provision of compassionate care, we are innovators in BC. We are designing “Dementia Villages” to ensure free movement of people with dementia within a home-like setting, and involvement of them in everyday activities within the household or the wider, secure community neighbourhood.

We are on the frontlines of the overdose crisis response, with our Emergency Departments caring for overdose patients daily and with the opening of new wrap-around services, including the St. Paul’s overdose prevention site, the Emergency Department Hub, a Transitional Care Centre, and expanded-hours for the Rapid Access Addictions Clinic.

We are continuing to transform vulnerable lives – and getting the world to notice – with our Crosstown Clinic, the only North American facility to provide chronic opioid-dependent people with medical heroin and hydromorphone along with a range of health services.

We are Providence – 6,700+ staff, 1,100+ physicians/medical staff, 210 researchers, and 1,500 volunteers forming a community of caring that shares a deep sense of tradition and delivers our mission with spirituality, integrity, stewardship, trust, excellence and respect for social justice and diversity.

Achieving Our Vision

Our Providence Plan, which has guided us through significant projects, announcements, and operational work, will continue to guide us into 2018/19.

This past year, we narrowed our focus on four critical areas. These critical areas of focus and their accompanying high-priority objectives help guide the work that we will focus on, commit our resources to and measure our success against as we aim to move ever-closer to our vision: Driven by compassion and social justice, we are at the forefront of exceptional care and innovation.

Operational Excellence

As an organization, we have our sights set on working together to improve the quality, cost, and value of patient care.
